BUSINESS NEWS

  • Yearby's Barbecue and Waterice will open in early October in Plano near U.S. Highway 75 and Parker Road with twice the seating of its Pilot Point location. Owners CJ and Sabrina Henley plan to serve their popular halal barbecue — featuring brisket, smoked chicken, and water ice — while bringing their family-run business closer to longtime customers.  The Dallas Morning News

CULTURE NEWS

  • Dungeons & Dragons: The Immersive Quest opens Oct. 15 at 2712 Central Expressway in Plano, offering an hour-long live role-playing experience with interactive theater, video storytelling and themed food for guests age 8 and up. Visitors will choose a character and embark on a quest to recover a magical gem while the event runs on select weekdays and weekends.  KERA

EDUCATION NEWS

  • A group of Plano students is leading a new initiative with the National Finance Economics Collective to teach financial skills to underserved youth and immigrant communities—workshops will be held in several cities soon.  Plano Star Courier

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Plano city council voted Monday night to raise the property tax rate from $0.42 to about $0.4376 per $100 of a home's value starting Oct. 1—homeowners may face higher bills as rising home values add to the cost of city services. The council also approved a $798 million budget to cover infrastructure repairs and emergency funds.  KERA

HEALTH NEWS

  • A new study by Dr. Vikas Jain at Texas Health Center for Diagnostics and Surgery Plano found that late nights and weekend alcohol use spiked the frequency of sleep apnea events during sleep—this rise in social apnea may also raise the risk of heart problems.  KERA
