Good morning, Plano. Here's your local news at a glance for Friday, the 18th of July.

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Texas Funeral Service Commission said the East Plano Islamic Center may resume burial rites Wednesday—this comes after the center received a cease-and-desist order in March and filed a lawsuit challenging the order. The commission will notify the center if any practices are found to violate Texas law as its investigation continues.  KERA
  • Two proposed bills in the Texas Legislature will change land use and planning policies in Plano and 18 other cities. Senate Bill 840 is set to allow multifamily housing in Plano's commercial areas—reducing city regulations on density and housing specs.  Plano Star Courier
  • At a recent meeting, Plano City Council approved several infrastructure and economic development projects—such as arterial concrete repair on Coit Road to improve pedestrian safety and ensure ADA compliance.  Plano Star Courier
  • Representative Keith Self introduced a bill this week to rename the stretch of U.S. Highway 75 between George Bush Turnpike and U.S. Highway 380 in Plano and Frisco as 'U.S. Congressman and Prisoner of War Sam Johnson Memorial Highway' in honor of the late lawmaker who served from 1991 until 2019 and died in 2020. Self said the measure honors Johnson—who survived nearly seven years as a prisoner during the Vietnam War—by recognizing his courage and sacrifice.  Plano Magazine

HEALTH NEWS

  • Texas lawmakers passed the Doctor Act that lets foreign-trained doctors skip long residency programs and get licensed faster starting in September—this helps deal with a growing doctor shortage.
