HEALTH NEWS

  • State health officials reported Tuesday that measles cases linked to a West Texas outbreak had grown to 717 since January—eight new cases included two in Gaines County and one each in Carson, Collin and Rockwall counties. Two school-aged children died from complications—most cases occurred in unvaccinated individuals as the department will update numbers on Tuesdays and Fridays.  FOX 4 News

SPORTS NEWS

  • Texas Rangers closer Luke Jackson suffered an injury when a 111-mph comebacker struck his pitching hand during the ninth inning of Monday's 2-1 win over the Colorado Rockies and he was replaced by Jacob Webb; manager Bruce Bochy said his X-rays were negative but his hand swelled, raising the possibility of an injured list stint.  NBC DFW
  • On May 13, Plano Prestonwood Christian lost the TAPPS state baseball championship game 2-0 to Central Catholic at UT-Arlington’s Clay Gould Ballpark—ending a seventh-inning rally by Jake Hernandez. The loss followed a 10-inning semifinal win and came after an early pitching setback—making the defeat even harder for the team.  The Dallas Morning News
  • On Tuesday, May 13, Plano John Paul II won the TAPPS Division I softball state championship by beating Antonian College Prep 12-2 in five innings at UT-Arlington's Allan Saxe Field. Senior pitcher Carly Holman led her team with five hits and six strikeouts while Antonian's 19-game winning streak ended.  The Dallas Morning News
