COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Plano Public Library offers free February programs that let community members celebrate Lunar New Year, play games, create pressed flower art, and get tax help. Events range from Feb. 7 at Haggard Library to Feb. 28 at Davis Library plus Game On meet-ups on select dates.  Plano Magazine
  • Charmaine Solomon, Director for Leadership Plano, will be inducted into the Texas Disability Hall of Fame on Friday, Feb. 6 at the Plano ISD Robinson Fine Arts Center (free event) for her work as an advocate for individuals with special needs, as announced by the North Texas Disability Chamber.  Plano Magazine

ECONOMY NEWS

  • ERCOT increased inspections after Winter Storm Uri led to major outages and weatherization became mandatory. By Dec. 1 for winter and June 1 for summer, over 4,079 facilities were inspected & grid performance has improved during recent storms.  The Dallas Morning News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Plano ISD is projecting a $43.75 million budget deficit for the 2026-27 fiscal year due to declining enrollment and rising state recapture payments. The district will adjust funding to address the shortfall.  Plano Star Courier

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Winter Storm Fern is moving into North Texas, prompting airlines including American Airlines, Delta and Southwest to waive change fees for flights departing today through Jan. 26 (if booked by Jan. 19). Officials advise travelers to monitor weather updates and allow extra time for Dallas-area airports as delays are expected.  KERA

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Gov. Abbott is set to hold a press conference at 10 a.m. today to explain state efforts as severe winter weather remains expected, with winter storm and extreme cold watches in effect for North and Central Texas + state officials prepare for possible power outages due to ice buildup.  FOX 4 News

HEALTH NEWS

  • Doctors say 3D mammograms, which detect tumors as small as a Tic-Tac (10 mm), helped lower breast cancer deaths by 44% since 1989. Insurers including Medicare now cover this low-dose screening as the American Cancer Society advises annual tests for women starting at age 40.  NBC DFW

  • Hannah Bilka from Coppell and Allyson Simpson from Frisco are ready for Team USA's game against Canada at the Milan Olympics. They took part in a Stars game ceremony to boost women's hockey and hope to inspire kids + grow the sport.  NBC DFW
